I am interested in what you are doing, altho' I can't say I understand how it can work to your benefit, unless you can communicate with your computer. That would be must faster than anything else, IF the computer understands the language of your head! I read the first set of your diary about coming to Portland, and testing, and going to receive the implant. Then all I see is that you left, while upset, about something. I suppose you are back now, altho I didn't see anything to indicate that. Let me know how you are doing with this, unless the language barrier is too time consuming, or difficult. Talking with someone in a foreign language, over the interenet, is not an easy thing, and I'm sure you are a busy person.Thanks For your time!

Thank Your for your timely response. I believe you have answered all my questions!  In going over the "Itinerary", I don't see where my memories are of any value. They are covoluted, biased, and disjointed. Yesterday I had an intensive conversation with Adrian. One of the subjects we’ve discussed is our fight that made you leave Portland. I think I’ll have to be honest to you: 

I am terribly sorry for my behavior and hope you can accept my apologies. I had no right to send you away. Please understand that I’m very concerned about your health and reacted the way I thought would be the best for you. I was mistaken. It doesn’t made sense to jell at you. Of course I shall never remove your implant unless you specifically ask me that.

Another thing I discussed with Adrian, is your involvement in the KMA project. The contacts you made with the Dutch Ministry of Defense have been very valuable. The project is now in its full glory and I owe you for that.

Is there anything I can do to regain your respect? Is there anyway to show you my appreciation concerning the KMA? You are more than welcome to return to Portland. That isn’t much that can delight me more.

I came across your site and am having trouble believing your claim that you can interface a computer with a real human brain and download/upload memories. I'm not saying it is impossible but I'm more than a little skeptical. If this were true wouldn't you have made front page news on all the major magazines by now? Do you have a list of sites with articles verifying your work? If so I'd love to see them. I think the possibility of human brain/computer interfacing is an amazing idea though.

I am glad to hear something from you. You must understand I was quit worried when you disappeared. It’s good to hear you’re okay, although I can’t approve your behavior. So I hope you’ll be back soon. 

In the meantime you must be curious what’s happening here in Portland. It’s a lot. There are some radical changes here, you probably like to know. We get our money form the Ministry of Defense now. In return, we extract the good memories of soldiers in training. If those brave young fellows ever go to war in future, they’ll have those memories laying at Braintec’s to comfort them in case of any traumatic stress or war syndrome. That’s good, isn’t it? I spent a lot of my time with Frank. We can get along quit well these days. So you understand I’m happy and I hope you find happiness soon.

After your flee, it is different here in Portland. I miss you, and our secret rendezvous at night while having uploads. I had to change my working schedule from the night to the daytime now. Kind of a jetlag without a jet. Anyway, I am preparing everything over here to be ready at any time to follow you, or to go home. I don’t know yet what I feel like. We, I mean Adelle and I, found out some nasty things about Steward. He was intended to abuse the M-store technique for selling it to the porn industry. Thanks to you, he thinks his private M-stores are now in your trunk in Amsterdam (LOL). I rented a container to store my personal things and I put your things in it too. So don’t worry. Everything is save and sound.

Leuk om alles weer eens door te lezen. Overigens hoor ik geluiden dat er geprobeerd wordt Braintec om zeep te helpen. Het democraties gehalte is nul ,nul en de schone schijn die via de website naar buiten wordt gebracht vraagt  natuurlijk om de ontdekking van een gigantische beerput. Een ander nieuwtje is dat er in het geheim door Braintec op een geheime locatie onderzoek gedaan wordt naar de mogelijkheid om bij Chimpansees (alleen bij vrouwtjes !!) een implantaat in te brengen . Via een Afrikaanse vriend is me ter oren gekomen dat er door Braintec pogingen gedaan worden diplomaten om te kopen om zodoende illegaal chimpansees uit te voeren voor die experimenten. Voor zover ik weet is dit nog maar het begin van dergelijke berichten. Als zo'n bedrijf in een  kwaad daglicht komt te staan kunnen ze het natuurlijk wel schudden. Jan.

Dear people,

I will write this in English, so everybody will be able to read it. First of all, I must insist on your discretion, and in no way this letter may fall in the hands of the Braintec employees (you will understand why when you read further). Except for Rosanne, she is my lifeline now and you can trust her. If you want to answer this email, please give it to her and she will sent it to my secret email address. You have noticed that I 'vanished' from Braintec for quite a while now. I will explain to you what happened. My last day at "Braintec" (at least that's what they call themselves) was when Tachikawa tucked me in with a sleeping pill. When I woke up I found myself on the floor of a dark room, alone, it looked and smelled like a basement. I was still pretty sedated, and kept on falling asleep and waking up again. At one time a woman came in and brought me a blanket and a glass of water. Next thing I know I was in a car, gagged and blindfolded, sitting in between two persons, who didn't say a word. I don't know how long we drove, but it seemed like hours. The car stopped (gravel) and when they helped me out, I could smell the iodine scent of seaweed, and mimosa, and I could hear waves pounding on a beach in the distance. Inside, someone pushed me gently into a chair and removed my gag and blindfold. My eyes needed some getting used to the light, and after that I saw that I was in a small country cottage, English style. In front of me in a chair there was an older man, grey haired, handsome, with friendly eyes, observing me quietly while stroking his chin. Behind this man, with one hand on the man's chair, was ... Hugo. And my 'dearest husband' was smiling at me. I was so shocked that the only thing coming from my mouth was "Wha...."
The older man started to speak to me in English, with a warm French-Canadian accent it seemed, but addressed me (despite having a French surname) as "mrs. Bootoil" He first apoligized repeatedly for my abduction, and that this "wasn't the way they normally operated," but in my case certainly neccesary, "for security reasons." Hugo didn't say a word. What his explanation came down to was this. The "Braintec" institute is just a tiny subsidiary of a bigger, global company called MemoCorp, which in its turn is financed by a secret think tank organization called 'Project for a New Global Order' (PNGO). He didn't mention who precisely its members were, but he said "think about the most powerful persons in the United States at the moment." He spoke about the PNGO lovingly, as if it was his favourite grandchild.
Last year, the PNGO "bought" a scientific research project of, how surprising, Dr. Tachikawa. On memory implants, as you all are well familiar with. The PNGO assigned MemoCorp to build an implant from Dr. Tachikawa's design, and to find a way to minimise its volume and to mass-produce them. But that was not the whole story. The Defense administration in the Pentagon, as well as the CIA (both highly represented in the PNGO) wanted to develope a "devise to insert the implants from a range of 200 meters or more." Surely, he was talking about some sort of gun, a weapon to be used in warfare. And Hugo, who still didn't say a word, already worked for the PNGO for over 10 years - his practise in the hospital was just a cover-up.
I know, all of this is hard to believe, and if I wasn't abducted, I wouldn't believe me either. But now you know what's really going on, and what you are a test rabbit for... Please, everybody, get out of there as soon as possible, these people aren't joking.

After the explanation of the older man, Hugo brought me upstairs to a bedroom, gave me a sleeping pill and told me to rest a while. "For what?" I asked. "Don't worry dear, everything's gonna be just fine," he answered me in a reassuring voice. Meanwhile I felt as if I was playing a part in a mediocre cold war movie. I took the pill, pulled up the covers, and when Hugo left, I thought things over. Why did they tell me all this? Weren't they afraid I was going to tell someone? Then I really got scared. No, of course they aren't afraid ... because they are going to kill me! I jumped out of bed. Although the pill already started working, my head was clear. I had to get out of there, fast. I looked out of the window, it was already dark, and I saw that it was ever so easy to climb out and jump in the garden. Even the window wasn't locked, which strengthened my idea that their plan was to silence me forever. "Pushin' up the daisies," my grandmother used to say. I thought of her, a tough and courageous old lady, when I jumped on the grass. I bruised my knee, but nothing was broken - I tried to ignore the pain while I ran (unnoticed!) towards the shelter of some pine trees ajacent to the lawn. Still running, in the corner of my eye I saw that a bright light went on, illuminating the garden, but I kept on running. I figured it would be best not to run in a straight line, but zig-zag towards the beach, the least likely place to find shelter. I ran trough a vast area of sand dunes with thorny bushes, shredding my stockings to pieces but I didn't care because I wasn't being Miss World right now. After about half an hour I was exhausted and rested for a while. In the distance I could see flash lights, and hear people calling my name. I was so tired, that I wasn't even scared anymore. I fell asleep.
I woke up the next morning, on the same spot, and the world was bright and sunny, as if nothing had happened and it was all just a bad dream. But I wasn't planning to doubt myself again - ever. After an hour's walk, I arrived at a road, and later a gas station - with a bus stop. I refreshed myself and succeeded to get some cash from my credit card (don't leave home without it) from the friendly manager.

I am sending you this letter from Tokyo. I don't have time now to explain what I'm doing here, so I'll try to get in touch with you later. I trust you all, and please, if you can, leave Braintec, it's a dangerous place!

Je bent nu toch daar, in Tokyo? Zou je het graag hebben dat ik je op kom zoeken? Je waarschuwt ons allemaal om zo snel mogelijk weg te gaan bij Braintec. Ik zie zelf nog niet direct een reden om weg te gaan uit Portland, behalve dan om jou te helpen misschien. En misschien ook wel een beetje om je waarschuwing, al heb ik niet het idee dat ik hier zo'n groot gevaar loop.

Als je graag hebt dat ik je op kom zoeken, waar vind ik je dan? Je klinkt nogal paranoia in je mail. Je weet dat je mij vertrouwen kunt, toch? Is this site a very well put together joke? If it is not, would it soon be possible to download one's life experience digitize it and upload it into a clone? Sommige mensen hebben echt niet meer dan 2 a 3 hersencellen... dat verklaart dan ook direct de behoefte aan een dergelijk implantaat. Ook al zou een dergelijke techniek bestaan, zien jullie dan niet in dat dit het regelrechte begin is van hi-tech Hitlerpraktijken? (...) Er van uitgaande dat men in staat zou zijn een implantaat in te brengen dat herinneringen met anderen uitwisselt/modificeert: Hoe gaat u er zeker van zijn dat er enkel met uw toestemming herinneringen worden 'gefaket' en dan ook nog van het soort waarmee u instemt? En wie verteld u überhaupt dat het implantaat beperkt is tot enkel het aanbrengen/wijzigen van herinneringen? (...) Wat ik maar even wilde laten inzien is dat een techniek als het prutsen aan iemands herinneringen in de verkeerde handen meer kracht bezit dan een atoombom. Hoe kan een proefpersoon zo snel van de operatie genezen zijn?

answer: Zo ingrijpend is de operatie eigenlijk niet. Het implantaat is bovendien gecoat met een gel van neurochips die de aangebrachte schade helpt herstellen. Die gel maakt tevens een connectie met de omringende cellen zodat de weinige energie die nodig is daarvan onttrokken kan worden.

Ik ben benieuwd hoe het er met de feestdagen aan toe zal gaan bij de Braintecjes ! Houden ze het droog daar in dat Japanse web ?

Hoe kun je in vredesnaam ons aanraden om ook proefpersoon te worden terwijl er bij jou alleen maar dingen mis lijken te gaan? Wens je ons die ellende met epileptie enzo soms ook toe? Aardig hoor! Gerard B.

answer: Ik begrijp je commotie. De geruststellingen van de artsen blijken eindelijk terecht: alle ongemakkelijkheden zijn van voorbijgaande aard en ik hoef me nergens zorgen om te maken. Wat mij aangaat wil ik best nog wel zo'n epileptische aanval doormaken als ik daarvoor in ruil nog lang proefpersoon mag blijven. Die herbelevingen zijn namelijk echt te gek en zou ik voor geen goud willen missen. Misschien had ik wel wat meer pech dan gebruikelijk omdat ik pas de derde mens met een MESI ben en is de procedure inmiddels wat verfijnder. Of misschien ben ik lichamelijk toch minder geschikt als proefpersoon dan ik door die testen heb doen geloven...

Beste Rosanne van Klaveren, Gisteravond, dinsdag 12 november 2002 luisterde ik vol ongeloof naar de reportage bij Radio Online, over je braintec avontuur. Ik was er zodanig van ondersteboven dat ik het mijn vriendin direkt heb verteld - die kon het niet geloven en ik evenmin - en er slecht van heb geslapen. Ik heb altijd gedacht dat het alleen mogelijk was om hersenactiviteit te vertalen naar een visueel beeld, maar toch nooit naar een concrete gedachte of een gevoel! Ik vind het nog steeds een onwerkelijk iets, waarvan ik alles wil weten voor ik het geloof, vrees ik. Hoe weet je immers welk visueel beeld bij welke gedachte hoort? Dat zou betekenen dat elke visualisatie werkt als een unieke vingerafdruk die een gedachte identificeert. Jeetje, als ik toch niet hier een hele lieve vriendin had die ik moeilijk kan missen (ze zou het overigens ook niet toestaan dat ik in me liet snijden voor een experiment) en een fijne studie enzovoorts, dan zou ik toch meedoen, als ik tenminste lichamelijk gezond was geweest, ik ben namelijk spastisch. Jammer dus.....Wat ik natuurlijk wel zou kunnen doen is er na mijn studietijd een boek over schrijven. :-) [Op dit momemt doe ik Sociale Dienstverlening en ik ga volgend jaar over naar Maatschappelijk werk, daarnaast ben ik bezig , in de praktijk, met schrijven en journalistiek in het bijzonder] Ben erg benieuwd naar je belevenissen en misschien zien we elkaar nog eens.Ik blijf je dagboek lezen! Beste Rosanne. Je moet echt de film 'Total Recall' eens gaan kijken, die met Arnold Swartsenegger. Daar beleven ze andermans herinneringen van vakanties omdat dat goedkoper is dan vakanties zelf.
